My Outlook for NewsPicks
Prologue
As an ex-intern at Uzabase, I used to think a lot about the future of its core product, NewsPicks, since project selection is a rate-determining factor in the ceiling of the value a software engineer can generate.
I am writing down some random thoughts about the prospects of my favorite news app after testing whether my claims hold up through several weeks of constant use.
What is NewsPicks?
It is a typical content curation service with a subscription-based business model. Its competitors include not only other news media outlets but also passive entertainment platforms.
What is the best state?
I believe that, in the near future, a cache representing detailed knowledge of specific fields of the worldâin other words, intuitionâwill be extremely critical to relative performance.
NewsPicks has designed its app to meet this potential demand in the following ways:
- high-quality content with the paywall removed beforehand
- verified professionals
- an evaluation function designed to make readers more societally well-educated
- the potential to eventually get paid for your proficiency
For some reason, it has yet to receive the spotlight it deserves.
I am quite confident that I am aware of several factors preventing it from revealing its true potential.
These are the areas I want to focus on while studying MLOps, given their potential for immediate practical application.
